It's OK....(Review From amazon) | General Comments: I own an aluminum 24" iMac (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM) and a Black Macbook (2.4 GHz Intel, 4GB RAM) and I naively thought Microsoft Office 2008 for the Mac would be "equivalent" to the Windows/PC version and was I ever so surprised. Being a Windows-based MS Office user for decades, I thought that the Mac version would closely mirror the Windows edition. Hmmm...not so much. The basic functionality of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Entourage (a PIM which I don't use) is there, but this version does not seem as full-featured or as stable as the Windows version. It's a mild adjustment - the ribbon from Office 2007 is not there and most commands are located in drop down menus - which is not the sleekest method, but functional nonetheless. Another mild annoyance is the Toolbox window - it's not as intuitive as the designer's hoped; but again, not bad, once it's figured out. Some users will find the Mac interface frustrating and may choose to abandon it.
Honestly, if/when I need Office-like tools, I have found it easier to (a) launch VM ware and use the Windows version of MS Office (which runs much faster on the Mac) to ensure I don't encounter any compatibility issues with documents, spreadsheets, databases, etc. that I need to create/edit for work or school, or (b) use shareware/freeware packages like NeoOffice, Open Office, Google Docs, Zoho, etc which seem to be more reliable and less prone to crashes/freezes than Mac Office 2008. |
